Introduction
What Tessera is, how the pieces fit together, and where to go next.
What is Tessera
Tessera is a backend platform for TypeScript teams. You describe your data once, as a typed schema, and Tessera turns it into a Postgres database, a typed API, authentication rules and realtime updates.
There is no separate API layer to maintain. When the schema changes, the migration, the generated client and the API change with it, so your frontend and backend never drift apart.
How it fits together
Piece
What it does
Schema
Tables, columns and relations written in TypeScript in schema.ts.
Environments
Isolated copies of your project: production, staging and preview branches.
Client
A generated, fully typed client for queries, mutations and subscriptions.
Rules
Row-level access rules that run inside the database, not in your app.
Functions
Server code that runs on triggers, schedules or HTTP requests.
Who it’s for
Product teams who want a real Postgres database without writing an API by hand.
Frontend engineers who want end-to-end types from the database to the component.
Teams moving off Firebase or a hand-rolled Express backend.
